3 Signs You Need to Call an Electrician for Your Home

Jun 21, 2023

There are many home projects that you can attempt to complete on your own. However, electrical work is not one of those projects. Anytime you need electrical work completed, you should hire licensed and experienced electricians to help you with your electrical needs. There are many reasons why you may need to hire an electrician. Here are three of those reasons.

1. It Has Been Years Since Your Electrical System Was Last Inspected

Electrical systems need to be regularly inspected by electricians. Many of your electrical components, such as electrical wiring, are hidden behind walls. As such, you cannot see if the wires are damaged, frayed, or have been destroyed by pests. An electrician can complete many tests to determine the overall condition of your electrical system and whether any repairs are needed. According to our experts, it's recommended that you have your electrical system professionally inspected every three to five years. If it has been five years since your last inspection, or longer, you are due for an inspection.

2. You Trip Circuits or Blow Fuses Frequently

Another reason why you may need to call an electrician for your home is that you are regularly tripping circuits or blowing fuses, depending on what type of electrical panel you have. Regularly blowing fuses or tripping circuits is a sign that your electrical panel cannot support your current energy needs. New circuits may need to be added or you may need to upgrade your current electrical panel.

3. Your Outlets Are Brown or Hot to the Touch

The final sign that you need to call an electrician for your home is having outlets that are brown, black, or hot to the touch. According to Family Handyman, the reading for a standard 120-volt residential outlet should be between 110 and 130 volts. If yours is brown, black, or hot to the touch, the voltage is likely higher than this. This puts you at risk of an electrical fire and may also damage items you attempt to plug into the outlet.

Electrical systems are complex, and the average person does not have the knowledge or expertise to inspect, repair or make changes to their electrical system. If you are in need of any electrical services, you should hire an electrician to assist you.
